Uasin Gishu is losing over Sh500M annually due to lack of County Referral Hospital.
Speaking after leading senators of the health committee on a fact-finding mission on the state of health services at the counties on Monday, Kamar said the county cannot now access the kitty from the National Government.
“It is sad that after District hospital was converted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital we don’t have a County referral hospital thus denying us sh 500 million from the National government,” said Kamar.
“Patients are now suffering because of lack of the facility forcing MTRH to handle outpatient yet it’s a referral hospital,” added the Uasin Gishu senator.
The chairman of the Health Senate committee Dr Michael Mbito criticized the National Government for distributing health equipment to counties without any data on the needs of the facilities.
He noted that the facilities are lying obsolete because of a lack of personnel to operate them to the extent of infants being handled in boxes because of a lack of incubators.
The government disburses Sh500M to country facilities as conditional grants to upgrade health facilities in counties.
Mbito further said that maternity wings are in a deplorable state and newborns are exposed to hazardous environments. Senators of the Health committee visited Kesses, Ziwa and Moiben health facilities in Uasin Gishu County.
