Sonko instead sent his lawyers Jared Magolo, George Kithi, Salim Mwadumbo, Cecil Miller and George Kithi to represent him in court.

The explanation by his legal team on his absence was that he was not feeling well and needed to seek medical attention.

The legal team told Senior Resident Magistrate Frederick Mayaka Nyakundi that the doctors had advised the governor to remain at home until he fully recuperates after he fell ill while in court.

National Police Service spokesman Charles Owino said that the governor behaved unlawfully while being arrested, adding that he has a case to answer.

“During the arrest, he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties,” read the statement.

The governor has affirmed that he is innocent after he was arrested for allegedly misappropriating Sh357 million belonging to the county government of Nairobi.

Sonko has linked his woes to his political stand. He has vowed to stand firm despite facing legal issues after the alleged loss of the funds from the county kitty.
