At least 554 journalists and 49 media workers have been killed around the world in the past 10 years according to the latest data report released by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Washington Post reports that at least 25 Journalists were murdered in 13 countries in 2019, a figure that show a high decrease from the former years. At the same time, the group was still investigating the death of 25 Journalists.
The committee noted that 19 Journalists ware killed as a result of target and murder with Mexico being the notorious nation for Journalists.
While the murder rate is the lowest since 1992, the committee advocacy director, Courtney Radsch noted, "It is worrying that most killings happened in Mexico, owing to the drug cartels fights and high impunity thus, a dangerous place for Journalists to work in the world."
"I hope that intensive media coverage of two high-profile journalist killings sent a signal to potential perpetrators that the international community will not tolerate attacks on journalists," - she added
That is in the light of 2017's Maltese investigation Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia killied after a bomb attached to her car exploded near her home and the 2019 murder of Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Instanbul.
In addition, the data showed that most killed were local Journalists for covering conflict, corruption or gang violence in their countries, as the killers walked scot-free due to rampant impunity.
The attack on press freedom was still rearing as governments continued to gag press freedom, threaten Journalists, raid media houses and control internet as CPJ reported that 250 Journalists have been put in prison globally.
