Former Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has weighed in on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2022 succession debate.
In a tweet on Saturday, Mutunga said that it is worrying to see the current twist of events in the political scene.
The retired CJ said that unless the leaders' tone down, the country could witness violence during the polls.
“This Kenyan intra-elite conflict about 2022 elections and succession should worry all of us. Kenyan history since independence records such conflicts resulting in political assassinations, murders, rapes, destruction of property, and baronial alliances that didn’t give us PEACE,” he tweeted.
Mutunga said that it is important for leaders to understand that Kenya is bigger than their ambitions adding that he fears there could be cases of political assassinations if things continue this way.
The remarks come at a time when Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Amolo Odinga have been firing shots at each ahead of 2022. It remains unclear whether Uhuru will endorse Ruto or Raila. The head of state has, however, maintained that only God knows who will lead this nation.
"Not every time politics. Leadership will come and God is the one who gives leadership. (Sio kila saa ni siasa siasa. Uongozi utakuja na Mungu ndio anapeana uongozi), " the head of state said during a past interview.
