In a rare show of empathy, Deputy President William Ruto was on Monday almost moved to years after coming across a group of several school going children.
Moved by the bizarre incident, Dr Ruto, who was in the company of Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, ordered his motorcade to stop before moving to where the children were.
For almost three minutes, Dr Ruto is heard interrogating the children and one of their parents on why they had not gone to school that day.
"Why are you not in school today? I thought you should be in school. Is there a problem really? " Ruto is heard asking as the woman says the nearby school was closed down.
Afterwards, Dr Ruto, who is almost shaken with the dire need of help to the villagers in Tendet in Kimilili, orders one of the aide to come with some money.
"How many are you? Are those your neighbours over there? I am giving you this Sh10,000. Give each of those neighbours Sh2,000 and take the remaining Sh4,000," he said.
Thereafter, Dr Ruto, who addressed a function not far from the village, asked headteachers to stop sending children away from school over lunch money.
"The son to President, speaker, deputy president, and a peasant farmer will all be equal if they all go to school. That is where we shall get the equity," he said.
"These children will be somewhere in future. You cannot chase away students from school on grounds that they have not paid lunch money. I also went to school without lunch but I am now the DP."
