In a tweet on Thursday evening, the Health CS urged the officials to work tirelessly to ensure that Kenyans do not consume meat laced with unwanted substances.

"Following the #RedAlert report, I directed all County Public Health Officials to undertake surveillance in all supermarkets, butcheries, meat processors and other food business operators to ascertain any presence additives not permitted use in meat and meat products," she said.

According to a report she received, it was noted that some meat sources are using excess amounts of Sodium Metabisulphite on their meat, which makes it bad for human consumption.

"So far, 15 percent of the samples taken have fallen short of the standard of permitted Sodium Metabisulphite. The offenders will face the law," she added.

In an investigative story dubbed 'RedAlert', NTV exposed the use of excess chemicals to preserve meat.
