Deputy President William Ruto has claimed that he was misquoted regarding his tweet about Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju.

In a tweet earlier in the month, the DP appeared to be questioning Tuju's closeness with the opposition, insinuating that he has transformed himself into an opposition strategist.

However, he on Sunday claimed that he was misquoted, alleging that he was mocking those claiming that the former Rarieda lawmaker is now an opposition insider.

In an interview with K24's Anne Kiguta at his Karen residence, the DP said that he sought to make it clear that Tuju is a leader of the ruling party, and associating him with the opposition is unrealistic.

"My tweet on Raphael Tuju needs to be read in context. Have we really stooped that low not to be able to distinguish between who is in the opposition and who is where?" he said.

And while this was followed with pressure from Ruto's allies on Tuju to resign, it was not the first time the Cabinet Secretary without portfolio was finding himself on the wrong side of the DP.

Weeks prior, Tuju was in even more trouble following the emergence of an alleged phone conversation between him and former Limuru MP George Nyanja, where he was heard mocking the DP over his heavy involvement in fundraisers.

Ruto on Sunday said that the Tuju issue is being held internally, at a time when he has been seen to work closely with ODM leader Raila Odinga and his brigade.

"The matter on Raphael Tuju is an internal issue," he noted during the interview.
