The National government has set aside Sh1.5 billion that will be used for the expansion of the Kipkaren River dam in a move that seeks to address water shortage in Eldoret town.
According to Deputy President William Ruto, the project is part of the Jubilee government's initiative to ensure Kenyans have access to clean water.
“The contractor is already at the site and I will be back soon to launch the programme. The Jubilee administration wants to ensure that residents get clean water to avoid waterborne diseases. The water you are getting is not enough that is why we want to expand the dam so that you may get sufficient water,” said Ruto in Yamumbi on Friday when he attended a burial ceremony.
He noted that other dams in Uasin Gishu will also be expanded in a move to ensure that as Eldoret town attains its city status, there is clean piped water for everyone.
"Kerita and Two Rivers dams both in Uasin Gishu County will also be expanded to get more water. After their completion, cases of walking for long distance to get water will be a thing of the past since locals will get water at their doorsteps," the DP said.
Most of the residential estates in Eldoret town Eldoret have been experiencing water shortage where locals receive the essential commodity once or twice per week due to a deficit in what is available compared to the consumption demand.
