Speaking to members of the press in Mombasa on Monday, the president of the judiciary described the backlog of cases as a big problem.

"The backlog of cases is one thing that has given us a lot of anxiety for the reason that we have quite a number of cases which have been pending in court for a very long long time ," he said

The chief justice, however, said that tremendous progress had been made in reducing cases that were more than five years.

There have been concerns from scores of Kenyans with cases in the law courts about the cases taking very long to be adjudicated.

Maraga said that the focus would now be on ensuring that cases do not drag beyond 4 years.

A number of reasons have been put forward on why there is a backlog, top among them limited resources.

CJ Maraga presided over the Annual Judges Colloquium which was held in Mombasa and was attended by judges from across the country.

The colloquium was held with the aim of reflecting on the past year and to plan on the coming year.

Challenges facing the courts and their possible resolution were also canvassed at length.

Maraga has been keen on instituting reforms in the judiciary in a bid to shape his legacy.
