Police have launched a manhunt for the robbers who shot and killed a Dock Workers Union (DWU) Senior accountant Samuel Kinanga on Wednesday.
Mombasa Urban Sub-County Police Commander Eliud Monari, who confirmed the incident, said Kinanga was also robbed of Sh1.5 million by unknown assailants outside the DWU offices in Mombasa town.
Kinanga had withdrawn the money from Barclays Bank, which was meant to pay the workers January salaries when he was attacked.
Monari said the three robbers, who fled on a motorbike, also stole cheques of an unknown amount from Kinanga.
During the incident, Kinanga was shot in the stomach but died while he was being taken to the hospital. His colleague, Katana Kenga, was shot in the leg but he's receiving treatment at Coast General Hospital.
“The official was from the bank when he was approached by two men who ordered him to surrender the money,” Monari said.
The commander said investigations are ongoing and a manhunt for the suspects has been launched.
“We have been informed that the CCTV cameras stopped since yesterday (Tuesday). We are following leads to establish if the robbery was an inside job,” added Monari.
