Four people died on Saturday night after a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Confirming the accident, Makueni county police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said that the accident involving two cars happened in Kabati area a few meters from Emali town.

He said that the two vehicles which were heading to different directions rammed into each other.

"It was around 2340hours along Nairobi- Mombasa highway where the accident happened involving two Toyota Premio cars, one KCH 893D heading to Nairobi and KBJ 103D heading to Mombasa," said Napeiyan on phone.

Two people died on the spot while two others died while receiving treatment at Kilome Nursing Home where they had been rushed for treatment.

"Upon reaching the location of the accident, the driver of KCH 893D pulled off his lane in a bid to overtake a fleet of motor vehicles, unfortunately, he hit the oncoming Premio KBJ 103D head-on killing the two occupants in the vehicle. The driver of KCH 893D and his passenger died in hospital while being attended to," the police commander said.

Bodies of the four were moved to Kilome Nursing Home mortuary for preservation.

Traffic officers visited the scene of the accident and investigations have commenced.

The vehicles which were involved in the accident were towed to Sultan Hamud police station for inspection.
