Speaking on Saturday when she met women groups in Navakholo sub-county, Muhanda said girls have been dropping out of school because of teenage pregnancies, adding that time has come for the same to be taken with the seriousness it deserves.

She noted that more than 1,000 cases have been reported to her in the recent past.

According to the Woman Rep, the situation has affected both primary and secondary school girls.

Muhanda said the government must put in place measures to ensure girls complete education before they can consider getting married.

“The victims have been forced to drop out of school. It is unfortunate because their dreams have been shuttered and their health put on the line,” she said as quoted by Standard.

According to her, declaring teenage pregnancies a national disaster will give the government more reasons to look for better ways to handle the same.

She appealed to Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha to consult Members of Parliament so that they can find ways to address the issue of sex education in schools.

The lawmaker said school-going girls are not getting enough education on matters of sex, which has made it difficult to address cases of teenage pregnancies.
