Doctors in Nakuru and Naivasha have raised concerns over an acute shortage of medics that have left them overworked.
Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) South Rift official Devji Atellah said doctors have been leaving facilities in Nakuru and Naivasha for being overworked.
Dr Atellah revealed that more than 100 doctors have resigned in the last two years while at least 60 other doctors left to pursue post-graduate studies in various fields.
He said that the workforce in various hospitals in the county is strained, adding that the situation needs urgent attention so that members of the public can continue receiving quality services.
“Quality of service delivery will be affected since we are not having adequate human resource,” said Dr Atellah as quoted by the Standard.
While expressing concern over the current health situation at Nakuru Level Five Hospital, Dr Atellah said there are only 20 doctors operating at the facility.
He said hospitals in Nakuru and Naivasha towns are understaffed, a situation that is causing doctors not to go on leave while some work without rest due to the shortage.
Dr Atellah added that there is need to hire more doctors to address the shortage saying that at least 200 doctors should be employed in the next three years to improve the situation.
“There are doctors who have never gone for leave simply because there is nobody to serve patients in various facilities,” he added.
