Orange Democratic Movement party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has refuted claims the party is pushing for a powerful Prime Minister post.
On Wednesday, Daily Nation carried a headline claiming ODM was pushing for the parliamentary system of government.
However, Sifuna refuted the claims, arguing the paper misrepresented facts, contrary to what the party discussed on Tuesday.
"Papers must carry news only, and not be agents of misinformation. If you are confused by the contradictory stories in today's dailies, it is because @StandardKenya chose journalism while @dailynation went with their imagination. Nothing in @dailynation story is factual. Rubbish (takataka)," he said.
On Tuesday, ODM leaders met at the party's headquarters in Nairobi and said the party will not push for a powerful PM post, arguing that all Kenyans should allow BBI to be consultative.
“Even though that’s what we presented and wanted, we must, however, be able to listen and accommodate the views of Kenyans who presented a different opinion,” party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said when asked about the party’s quest for a powerful PM and single seven-year presidential term.
Reading the formal statement after the meeting, Sifuna said: “As a party we are cognizant of the fact that BBI process is a consultative give and take and that no one party or individual can bulldoze the discussion or indeed the outcome.”
However, despite Sifuna's outbursts, another paper, The Star, reported that most lawmakers told ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday, that they prefer a powerful PM.
For instance, Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino is said to have asked Odinga to push for a powerful PM and two deputies.
“There should be an Executive Prime Minister and also the PM should have two deputies, with one below the age of 45," Babu is said to have argued.
