Three suspects on Tuesday sustained injuries in Majengo Mapya in Likoni, Mombasa County, during a shootout between the suspects and the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), seven suspects were arrested in the operation and more than 1,600 bullets recovered by a multi-agency led team.

"OVER 1,600 Rounds of Ammos, Grenade, G3 Rifle among other Assorted Weapons were early today confiscated at Majengo Mapya in Likoni in a resolute Operation by a Multi-Agency Team led by #ATPU Detectives. THREE Terror Suspects also Fatally Injured in a Shootout & 7Arrests effected," DCI tweeted

Police uniforms and military gears were also recovered during the operation. The suspects who were arrested are helping police with the investigations.

"Also recovered were the following; 68 Air Rifle Pellets, 5KG of Ammonium Nitrate, Nine Balaclavas, Military/Police Uniforms, Military Holsters & Porches, Rifle Oil, One GPS, Six Machetes, Three Knives & other assortments. Those arrested currently undergoing Investigative Interviewing," added the DCI.

Standard Media reported that the operation came hours after residents of Mombasa were assured of their safety amid fears of an impending attack by Al-Shabaab militia. 

The confrontation between the police and the terror suspects also comes weeks before the Mashujaa Day celebrations which are set to be held in Mombasa.
