President Pombe Magufuli has warned against sponsorship from rich people who have been funding his party.
The Chama Cha Mapinduzi [CCM] chairman on Friday said the party will no longer accept donations from the wealthy people, arguing they are out to take over the party.
According to him, the wealthy tycoons take advantage of the sponsorship to pursue certain goals in government.
Magufuli said the party will henceforth depend on donations from members to run its activities across the country.
“These rich people have the goal of owning the party and putting it into their pockets, something that is not good for the health of the party,” he insisted.
Also, Magufuli expressed fears that the party is not guaranteed to form the government this year, arguing that their opponents are working hard to dethrone him.
He asked party members to move across the country and defend the seat ahead of October polls.
“The party has changed a lot and our colleagues have also changed too. We have received many members, who have crossed over from opposition parties because we have influence but we must continue to work hard,” said the President.
CCM is facing a challenge from Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo [CHADEMA] which is gaining momentum in Tanzania.
