The denial of the travel document was confirmed by a US immigration official who spoke on condition of anonymity according to Reuters.

This is the latest twist in the fallout from the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander who lost his life in an American strike.

The Iranian Mission said that it was yet to receive official communication regarding Zarif's visa application.

“We have seen the media reports, but we have not received any official communication from either the U.S. or the U.N. regarding Foreign Minister Zarif’s visa,'' the State Department said as quoted by Reuters.

Javad Zarif claimed that the denial was a deliberate effort by the US to prevent the truth from being revealed.

"They fear that someone comes to the US and reveals realities," Zarif said on Tuesday as quoted by Aljazeera.

The United Nation Security Council meeting is slated for Thursday and it would be the first chance for the Iranian foreign minister to address the meeting since the assassination of Qassem Soleimani.
