He may be a veteran in Kenyan politics, but former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is facing the biggest test of his political career ahead of the 2022 election.

Torn in between teaming up with President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of the next poll and forming an alliance with Deputy President William Ruto, Kalonzo has a tough choice to make.

Nearly a fortnight ago, former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, a close Kalonzo associate, asked the former Vice President to forge an alliance with Dr Ruto in the run to the 2022 election. In fact, the vocal former Senator declared that he will work round the clock to ensure that the Kalonzo-Ruto alliance materializes.

However, Kalonzo would swiftly distance himself from the Muthama statement, saying that that was a personal statement which doesn't represent his position.

According to Kalonzo, such statements are meant to create a wedge between him and the President. Well, whichever the case, this is a Kalonzo long-time political friend speaking. Whether the sentiment was Muthama's personal opinion is another story.

Then there is President Kenyatta on one side. In fact, after the handshake between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2018, Kalonzo swiftly embraced the deal. As a result, he landed a special envoy job. And during the burial of his father late last year, he vowed to stick with the President to the bitter end saying that he was ready to be his "Mtu wa mkono".

With Uhuru on one side and Ruto on the other side, Kalonzo is in between them. He seems to prefer to be on Uhuru's side. His allies including Muthama seem to think otherwise. And Kalonzo will make the final decision.
