In a Tweet, Khalwale on Monday said it would be difficult for a candidate from the Luhya community to clinch the presidency unless he or she works closely with other likely presidential candidates from other regions.

Mudavadi and Wetangula have been quiet over whether their respective parties will build alliances with other parties ahead of 2022.

"As the Deputy Party Leader of Ford Kenya, I urge [Moses] Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi to break their silence on ANC/Ford Kenya merger and [declare] exactly which presidential contender they are building a friendship with for possible alliances. To tango the Presidency, it takes two," the former Ikolomani MP said.

Khalwale has been pushing for the merger of ANC and Ford Kenya as he leads efforts to unite the Luhya ahead of the poll in which Kenyans will elect the country's fifth president.

Some elected leaders allied to both Wetangula and Mudavadi have been warming up to Deputy President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga who both have interest in the country's top seat when President Uhuru Kenyatta leaves State House.

Mudavadi recently hosted then Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe in Kakamega. Murathe is a close ally of Uhuru and is one of Ruto's biggest critic.

Khalwale in December last year played host to Ruto in Malinya Kakamega for the famous bullfighting competitions.
