Women leaders under the Team Embrace group have sounded the alarm for politicians opposed to the handshake.
Led by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, the politicians on Tuesday said that the critics of the handshake are becoming a threat to the unity currently being enjoyed in the country and are out to divide it once again.
She pointed out that under the handshake and the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), the nation is headed in the right direction.
"We were once hostile to each other. Now Kenya is headed for a rebirth, as we initiate public engagement across our political divide following our strong unity," she said during a press conference at a Nairobi hotel.
Her remarks were echoed by Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, who accused those opposing the BBI report of causing confusion among Kenyans.
She added that the nation stands to benefit greatly from both initiatives, a reason why the group should join hands with the pro-BBI side.
“Leaders are meant to shed light not to plant confusion. A divided country that is permanently on the brink is not our best interest," said Wanga.
The politicians also questioned the ground on which the critics are fighting the BBI, yet President Uhuru Kenyatta who co-founded it together with Raila Odinga has no idea about what is in the BBI report.
The opposing side is dominated by politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto, who have based their rejection of the handshake and BBI on the inclusion of Raila.
