Led by Siaya governor Cornel Rasanga, the team said they will not give Aukot any opportunity to realize his push for law reforms.

Rasanga said he will lead the region in boycotting the initiative, the same way it boycotted the October 26, 2017, presidential rerun.

“We know how to boycott elections and we will boycott that referendum,” he said as quoted by Standard.

Similar remarks were made by area MPs who vowed to rally the entire region to reject the proposal by Aukot and his team.

Alego Usonga lawmaker Samuel Atandi urged the people to wait for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) task force report which is also expected to endorse a separate referendum.

Other area leaders who also urged residents to wait for the BBI report include; Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) and Otiende Amollo (Rarieda).

The region made history in 2017 after refusing to take part in the rerun on Raila's orders, after he personally boycotted the polls following his August loss to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Youths in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Siaya managed to block the elections in most areas, resulting in running battles with the police.
