The Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed has received the Nobel Peace Prize that was awarded to him by the Norwegian Nobel Committee a few weeks ago.
Mr Abiy delivered an emotional speech when he stood up to give his address in front of a packed auditorium.
In his address, he laid out in visceral terms the horrors of war as he vouched for peace.
"We do not want the Horn to be a battleground for superpowers nor a hideout for the merchants of terror and brokers of despair and misery," Abiy said in his Nobel lecture in the Norwegian capital Oslo as quoted by the Cable News Network (CNN).
Abiy Ahmed was awarded the coveted Peace Prize for his role in bringing to an end decades of armed conflict between his country and neighbouring Eritrea.
Upon his election, the prime minister embarked upon a policy of engagement.
The chairperson of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Berit Reiss-Andersen hailed Abiy as a peacemaker.
"You have demonstrated an understanding that peace among neighbours is essential in a troubled region. You have made common cause with all the stakeholders from Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya who have participated in promoting mediation and peaceful resolution," she said.
Abiy said that he had accepted the Peace Prize on behalf of Ethiopians and Eritreans.
"I accept this award on behalf of Ethiopians and Eritreans, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of peace," he said.
He also warned that social media platforms were being used by hatemongers to sow divisions.
