Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has criticized Members of Parliament over the current impasse on the Division of Revenue Bill 2019.
Through a press statement to media houses on Monday, Sonko termed the MPs as selfish noting that failure to pass the Bill was a threat to devolution.
“The MPs should first think about the spirit of devolution and the impact of failing to pass such a bill. The Constitution is very clear on the role of counties and how county funds are used,” he said.
Sonko also expressed fears that counties could be plunged into a financial crisis if the issue is not solved in time.
He called for President Uhuru Kenyatta's intervention to solve the matter.
The county boss further said that it was hypocritical for MPs to demand salary increase and more allowances yet they are against the allocation of resources to counties.
He called on all Governors, Senators, and MCAs to unite and speak in one voice to defend devolution.
The Senate and National Parliament are embroiled in a push and pull over the amount of money that should be allocated to counties.
While Senators wanted Sh330 billion set aside for devolved units, MPs approved a proposal from the National Treasury that allocated Sh310 billion as shareable revenue for counties.
Mediation between Senators and MPs hit a snag, subsequently leading to the collapse of the Bill.
