The passengers, most of whom were travelling from Kakamega to Nairobi, said that the driver dismissed all their pleas to drive carefully, instead driving defiantly.

They said that they had to stop the bus in Mamboleo, Kisumu, before calling the police and handing him over to face charges of reckless driving and save their own lives.

According to Harizon Wachuli, one of the passengers, they had to take him out of the bus by force before the police arrived at around midnight to pick him.

“We had to act or perish. The driver seemed unfit to drive. We literally had to lift him from the driver’s seat,” he was quoted by the Standard.

The passengers spent the rest of the night at the Mamboleo Police Station, where the vehicle was later towed to. However, the bus conductor managed to get away.

The bus owner said that the vehicle was on the road without his knowledge, ironically adding that it was on sale and was supposed to be at the yard to be viewed by a potential buyer.

He promised to facilitate the transport of the stranded passengers, also promising to take drastic measures against his crew.

“We have already arranged how passengers will be transported to Nairobi but I have to sack the entire crew," he said.

The police said that the driver will be arraigned to face charges of reckless driving.
