Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has suffered a major blow after the court allowed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to deregister him following his nomination to Parliament.

Employment and Labour Court Judge Nelson Abuodha on Friday ruled that the union has the freedom to dismiss its boss because of divided attention as far as his post is concerned.

The governing body, therefore, will decide on whether to retain him in office or not.

The Teachers Code of Conduct and Ethics (2015) requires that all teachers maintain neutrality. Sossion is accused of defying the same when he accepted to take up the nominated MP position.

Sossion was nominated into the National Assembly by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

“The acceptance of the nomination to National Assembly by ODM obviously puts Mr Sossion on partisan political activity. It was a manifestation of an agreement to support ODM agenda both in and outside Parliament,” said Justice Abuodha, as quoted by the Daily Nation.

The union argues that Sossion went against its tenets of administration when he agreed to the offer presented by the Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga-led political outfit.

Sossion has been fighting to retain the secretary-general post following his nomination to parliament.
