Members of the Akorino religious sect have called upon Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi to exempt them from wearing helmets when riding on bodabodas.
This comes amid the reintroduction of Michuki rules which requires all public service vehicle users to comply to guidelines, among others, the use of headgear while on transit on commercial motorbikes.
But according to Mbeere South Akorino Association Chairman Patrick Munyi, the law goes against the church's regulations and beliefs.
He says that the religion does not allow its hopefuls to wear anything on top of their turbans which is their main identity.
"We appeal to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to consider our plight. We don’t want to engage in anything that conflicts with our faith,” he was quoted by the Monday Standard.
The rules also dictate that public transport users must fasten their seatbelts at all times to avoid avoidable deaths and injuries in case of accidents.
In its first week of implementation, matatu operators slipped into a strike in protest, but would call it off a day later after the government refused to relent on the implementation.
All matatus are also to have a dustbin and a speed governor as the government seeks to restore sanity in the roads.
