Constable Richard Wahome is said to have shot himself using his own riffle while on duty at the Nzoia Police Station in Likuyani on Wednesday night.

According to Sergeant Jomo Japya who was in charge at the time, he heard gunshots, after which he alerted his colleagues only to find the deceased lying in a pool of blood.

He added that the constable shot himself using his AK47 riffle, an incident that was confirmed by Kakamega County Police Commander Bernard Muli.

The police boss said reasons behind the suicide remain unknown, but a probe has been launched into the matter.

"We have not established why the officer could have turned the gun on himself but investigations are ongoing,” he said.

This comes only a week after another such incident inside a police station in the county, following last Thursday's incident where an officer was found shot dead in his residence in Kakamega Police Station.

The 24-year-old Administration Police officer was found lying in a pool of blood with his hands still holding onto his riffle loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition.

Police at the station are still investigating the incident.
