Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday revealed that his deputy will be a woman.
In a long Facebook post explaining why he turned down Phili Sogoti Chepsat's request to be his deputy, Sonko noted that he will honour his earlier promise to Nairobians.
"It is worth of note that as a politician, I believe in keeping my promises to the electorate. And earlier, I committed myself to Nairobians that my nominee for Nairobi City County's Next Deputy Governor shall be a woman," he said.
Sonko also revealed that he wants to uphold the third gender rule. He pointed out that he balanced the number of Nairobi County executive members, with women taking half of the slots.
However, Chepsat was encouraged to continue applying for leaderships posts in Nairobi County.
Sonko gave him hope of landing a position in his administration noting that he will sack some of the Members of County Executive Committee and Chief Officers.
The city has been without a Deputy Governor ever since Polycarp Igathe resigned in January 2018.
“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1 pm on 31st Jan 2018."
“I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county. Without fear, favour or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians and my family. Thank you for the encouraging support given to me so far,” he said as quoted by Nation.
