Two die at a road accident in Nyamira
Two people died on the spot after a motorcycle operator and a Nyamira County tax collector were hit by a matatu that was heading to Nyamira from Kisii.
The incident happened early on Tuesday at Kemera area along Kisii-Nyamira road. Witnesses said a speeding matatu collided head-on with a motorcycle thus causing the accident.
"The driver of the matatu was overtaking a lorry when he hit an oncoming motorcycle head-on. The two occupants the motorcycle operator and the tax collector died while the ones whom were in the matatu suffered mere injuries.
Machuki Robert an eye witness said members of the public crowded the scene to rescue the victims in vain. Amos Omariba, Nyamira County police commander confirmed the incident and said drivers should adhere to set traffic rules and regulations to curb road accidents.
"It is very unfortunate we lost the two occupants. The driver of the matatu escaped unhurt. I would like to urge our road users to be so keen to avoid this menace," Omariba noted.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to Nyamira County hospital morgue. The police commander confirmed that police officers manning roadblocks will continue with a crackdown on Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) which are not adhering to the newly introduced road rules famously known as 'Michuki rules'.
