Embattled Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has finally been released from custody after paying Sh15 million cash bail imposed on him by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday.
Governor Waititu managed to secure his freedom on Thursday morning, four days after he surrendered himself to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and subsequently charged in court over corruption.
On Wednesday, Waititu's lawyer Tom Ojienda filed an application at the High court seeking a review of the Sh 15 million cash bail.
The Kiambu County boss argued that the bail terms imposed on him by Anti- Corruption Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi was excessive.
In his application that will be argued in court on Friday before Justice John Onyiengo, Governor Waititu claimed that his constitutional rights were violated by the harsh bail terms.
On Monday, Governor Waititu alongside his wife Susan Wangari and six other county officials pleaded not guilty to graft charges relating to the alleged Sh588 million irregular tender.
Governor Waititu's wife was released on Wednesday freed after paying Sh 4 million bail slapped on her by the anti-graft court.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had approved Waititu’s prosecution, stating that he has enough evidence to prove his case.
Governor Waititu's release comes a day after his deputy James Nyoro took charge of the county operations.
Nyoro took charge after the Magistrate Court issued an ordered barring Governor Waititu from accessing his office until the case is heard and determined.
