US President Donald Trump has scored a major victory at the Supreme Court in his campaign to bar immigrants from coming to the country.
In a short order that was not signed, the apex court said that the government could bar asylum seekers from the US for failing to apply for asylum before arriving at the border.
Those seeking to be given asylum will now be obligated to apply before arriving at the US border for their application to be considered.
Tens of thousands of immigrants who move to the US border through Mexico will be affected by the order.
The American Civil Liberties Union had sought to challenge the order obligating immigrants to apply for asylum from their country of origin.
"The current ban would eliminate virtually all asylum at the southern border, even at ports of entry, for everyone except Mexicans, " the group said in a petition.
Two judges Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsbur, however, offered a dissenting view, saying the order would "upend longstanding practices regarding refugees who seek shelter from persecution."
Critics of the Trump administrations order aimed at barring immigrants have said that it is inhuman and called for its scrapping.
They say that the immigrants are usually running away from danger to make the applications in one of the countries en route to the US.
