Two women on Friday confessed to a Marimanti court how they circumcised each other by using a razor blade.
The two, 27-year old Winjoy Wanja and 25-year old Julia Ngugi are married to two brothers and hail from Ntongoni village in Tharaka-Nithi County.
They explained to the court that they resulted to circumcising each other so as to protect their children from a curse which runs in the family.
According to the women, their husbands' grandmother had instructed all women married into the family to undergo circumcision or else their children will die.
The women further said that the spirit of the late granny appears to them in their dreams every night. The spirit allegedly gives them two options of either undergoing the circumcision or watch their children die.
Ngugi has two children while Wanja has three children.
“We decided to circumcise each other to avoid the death of our children,” Wanja told the court as quoted by Daily Nation.
Appearing before the Marimanti Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Maina, the two women said that they were not aware of the alleged curse in their husbands' lineage and only came to realize it when they begun having the dreams.
Ngugi pointed out that after they had undergone the circumcision, the spirit of their husbands' grandmother stopped haunting them in their dreams.
The two were ordered to be detained in police custody while awaiting judgement.
