As the referendum debate takes shape, Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has rubbished claims that Deputy President William Ruto and his allies are opposed to the constitutional change being fronted by a section of leaders.
Speaking to the media on Sunday in Eldoret, the vocal legislator said they do not oppose the referendum.
The MP who is a close ally of DP Ruto, however, expressed concerns that holding a referendum will only add more burden to the already suffering Kenyans.
"Hatuogopi kura ya maoni ni vile tu nawahurumia wakenya sana ambao wamelemewa kiuchumi. Hatuezi kukubali kubadilisha katiba kwa sababu ya viongozi wachache wanaotaka vyeo. (We do not fear the referendum, we only feel for the poor Kenyans with the current economic state in the country. We cannot change the constitution to suit some individual's interest for positions)," Sudi wrote on his Facebook page.
"Hali ya uchumi ya Wakenya umedhoofika mno na tunaitaji uongozi unaowajenga wananchi kiuchumi. (The economic state of Kenyans has deteriorated a lot and we need leadership that builds the economy)," he added.
There have been calls over changing the constitution with some leaders hinting at the creation of the Prime Minister's position.
