Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Tuesday presented himself to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters to shed more light on garbage collection tender award.
Sonko arrived at the EACC quietly without the knowledge of the media to give an explanation on the illegalities and irregularities allegedly surrounding the tender. He was grilled for more than nine hours before he departed the place. Sources indicate that he drove to the offices at around 6 a.m. before he was ushered in by the panel from the EACC at 6.45 a.m. for quizzing over the matter.
Sonko, who spoke after the grilling said that the process took too long because it involved Statements of different firms in the awarded tender.
“We took long because we recorded 13 statements…there were 13 companies involved, they were questioning the procurement process,” he said.It was an usual visit by the governor since he was not accompanied by his entourage as he arrived at the EACC offices. It remains unclear why Sonko decided to pull such a move after he was asked to appear before the EACC.Nairobi County Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had put the governor on the spot after he failed to account for Sh160 million allocated towards garbage collection.
