The plans to arrest wanted Mombasa tycoon Ali Badruddin Punjani have reportedly been dropped.
Punjani hit the headlines last month after the police revealed that he was a wanted man in connection with drug trafficking across the country.
The government had announced plans to arrest him once he lands back into the country but it seems the plans have since been dropped after the police decided to go silence over the same.
The tycoon, who reportedly funded several powerful politicians, is walking scot free after he sneaked into the country.
It remains unclear why the government changed its tune on the arrest of the billionaire after it declared war on drug barons.
It is claimed that the tycoon arrived into the country and struck a deal with the government that saw the change in plan to arrest.
His lawyer had asked the court to reconsider the order on his arrest before the change of plan.
“We wish to withdraw the application dated 5th September 2019. The police have assured us there is no intention to arrest my client,” said Punjani’s lawyer Jared Magolo.
State lawyer Benson Muthomi, however, said that he was not aware of the plans to arrest the businessman as alleged.
“We are not aware of any warrant of arrest pending against the applicant or that the first respondent (police) intend to arrest the applicant.
We wrote to a letter to the regional DCI on September 10, seeking instructions over this matter and upto now, no information has been forwarded to us,” Muthomi said.
The businessman has been linked to the sale and distrubition of the drugs not only in Kenya but also entire World.
Several suspects were arrested and charged for having connections with the businessman but later freed.
