The Council of Governors (CoG) has become a stumbling block in the fight against graft, the Civil Society Reference Group (CSRG) has said.
The lobby group on Monday faulted the council for defending county bosses accused of graft, after CoG took issue with the decision to bar colleagues accused of corruption from accessing office.
The governors affected by the ruling include; Ferdinard Waititu (Kiambu), Mike Sonko (Nairobi) and Moses Kassaine (Samburu).
Presiding convener of CSRG, Suba Churchill, said time has come for the council to stand with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the war against the vice.
Churchill said there is no way the government will ensure accountability if the council opposes the court's ruling.
He claimed some wayward county bosses have taken advantage of the council, to defraud the county governments knowing very well that they will be defended in the event they are arrested.
“Defending corrupt governors blindly is not one of the reasons for which the CoG was established under Section 19 of the Inter-Governmental Relations Act, No 2 of 2012, “ he said in part.
"Recent statements and actions by the CoG seem to suggest that devolution is about massaging the egos of individual governors and allowing them to mismanage county resources with impunity. That is not why Kenyans [promulgated] the Constitution in 2010 with a devolved system of government," he added.
