2018 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia are yet to receive prize cash given to winners.
Speaking to Goal, club treasurer Sally Bolo confirmed that the league managers are yet to wire the cash to the club.
“We are struggling financially and to be honest we have not been paid by KPL for winning the 2018 title,” Bolo told Goal on Tuesday.
K'Ogalo were to be paid Sh4 million for winning the KPL title.
However, he said he understands the situation at KPL as they are broke after prize sponsors SportPesa terminated sponsorship after quitting the Kenyan market.
SportPesa's exit has also affected Gor Mahia directly because they were the main sponsors of the 18-times champions.
When reached by Goal, KPL CEO Jack Oguda confirmed that they are yet to remit the money.
“Yes…it is true, we owe them [Gor Mahia]. We usually pay the winning bonuses before the start of every season but this time around we could not do the same because the sponsors left us almost the same time," Oguda told Goal.
However, the KPL boss is hopeful that they will get another title sponsor before the end of the season.
“I don’t think we should give up. We have better goodwill outside here because most people are following the Kenyan league, so I am hoping soon we will have someone to take over as title sponsors," said Oguda.
