President Uhuru Kenyatta's political plans post 2022 could end up becoming one of his biggest nightmares for the over 20 years he has been in politics.
Whether he will go home at the end of his second and final term as President in 2022 remains to be seen. But for now, the option of remaining as a big political player after the next general election seems unpopular, at least going by Kandara MP Alice Wahome's statement on Thursday.
According to Wahome, President Kenyatta is a threat to Kenya's democracy. The issue here is a recent statement by former Gatanga MP David Murathe claiming that the President will go for Prime Minister position come the next general election- the statement which Uhuru is yet to confirm or deny.
The statement coming from Wahome, the President's fiercest defender during the 2017 general election, could be a sign of bad things to come. Probably, many Kenyans share the Kandara lawmaker's opinion.
To further complicate the President's position, Wahome from Uhuru's Central Kenya backyard. His political base. The region that propelled him to State House.
A shaky Central region turf is a sign of bad things. May be, the vote-rich region is keen to chart its own political future away from Uhuru- a move that could make the President a lame duck will no bargaining power on any political deal-making table.
If Uhuru still harbours political ambitions, then he has a mountain to climb. His home turf's political support is not guaranteed, at least going by Wahome's statement. And the President could be consigned into political dustbin come 2022.
