Barely three months after the nation was treated to political exchanges and contradicting reports about the Sh400 million gold scandal, another such deal has been reported.
A Ukrainian national is crying foul after being allegedly conned Sh132 million in a gold deal in Nairobi, a deal he says took place in October 2016, and which began in Uganda.
Kavalenko Hennadii says that he bought the gold from a Congolese dealer in Uganda and decided to ship it through Kenya, after being convinced by the dealer that it would be easier.
He says that though he saw the consignment at the dealer' offices when he visted, and even managed to get another investor named Vladimir Bodnarchuk after running out of money.
He adds that he was shown the gold for testing and ascetsined its originality, with the only remaining job being shipping it to Ukraine, which they agreed would be handled by the dealer.
Hennadii says that he paid the bulk of the money in April 15, 2018, after which he was again told to pay Sh13, 600,000 for an ICGLR certificate but the gold was never shipped.
“We fulfilled our obligations. I transferred Sh30,001,500 ($300,015) through a local bank and gave them Sh29,131,000 ($291,310) in cash," he says.
He adds that after making the Sh13.6 million payment on June 15, one of the gold company's manager demanded another Sh20,000,000, which saw him report the matter to the DCI.
“But after about one week he failed to ship the consignment and said he needed additional Sh20,000,000 ($200000),” says Henaddii.
In April detectives from the DCI raided the offices and arrested some workers, with the case now ongoing in court.
