Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Saturday afternoon suggested stiff sentences be put in place against corrupt public officers and leaders.
Through a statement on Twitter, Raila pointed out that if no step is taken to counter corruption, Kenyans will suffer from the consequences.
He went ahead to explain that corrupt individuals will slow down the economy of the country, and therefore the need for serious measures to be taken against suspects in graft cases.
He alleged that the corrupt appeared to be posing as well-wishers while the ultimate victim was the citizen.
"If we don’t deal with the scourge of corruption, life will continue being hard for the majority of Kenyans because what is supposed to grow the economy gets stolen. We need stiff sentences for the corrupt so that they stop masquerading as heroes and philanthropists among us," Raila Odinga stated.
Although Raila did not mention any specific individual, his sentiments come at a time when a rise in corruption cases among government officials have been reported.
Currently, three governors have pending graft cases in court and have consequently been barred from accessing the office.
The three include Nairobi County governor Mike Sonko, Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu and Samburu county governor Moses Lenolkulal.
Former National Treasury CS Henry Rotich was also mid last year charged with graft and consequently removed from office.
