The Office of the Inspector General on Saturday issued a statement on the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who was apprehended on Friday in Voi.
In the statement that was shared on Twitter, the office of IG pointed out that Mike Sonko was abusive, unruly and violent during his arrest.
"During the arrest, he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duty. In the process he assaulted and injured senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment," part of the statement read.
Sonko will consequently in addition to the graft case facing him, be charged with assault and resisting arrest.
The office further put on notice an alleged group of people who were planning to cause unrest following the arrest of the governor.
"We would also like to inform the public that we have reports that a group is mobilizing to cause civil unrest. The general public is therefore warned that persons intending to assemble, demonstrate, or picket must do so with strict adherence to the law," the office stated.
The office further assured the public that Sonko's case will be handled in accordance with the law and there should not be unrest.
Social media users were urged to ignore messages that were in circulation regarding the arrest of the governor.
