Katie Hill, a United States of America House of Representatives member, has given what she described as her final speech amid affair allegations.
She said Thursday that she was resigning from her House of Representatives seat because of the double standards that had been applied to her case.
Hill took aim at the tabloids that zealously covered her alleged affair, describing the intrusive coverage as gutter politics.
She revealed that she had cried and gone to the dark places that the mind can go amid the devastating coverage of the controversial aspects of her private life.
"I will never shirk my responsibility for this sudden ending to my time here," Hill said, "but I have to say more because this is bigger than me."
"I am leaving now because of a double standard. I am leaving because I no longer want to be used as a bargaining chip. I am leaving because I didn't want to be peddled by papers and blogs and websites, used by shameless operatives for the dirtiest gutter politics that I've ever seen, " the first time legislator said.
For Katie Hill, the dramatic decision to leave the stage was a matter of taking personal responsibility.
She, however, appeared to suggest that the vicious treatment she was receiving at the hands of the media had much to do with her gender.
