An elderly woman mysteriously died in Birongo, Keumbu, Kisii County on Wednesday.
Mellen Kerubo is reportedly said to have been healthy and jovial when she woke up and embarked on her daily chores.
According to area chief, Kefa Omai who spoke to Hivisasa on phone, he said the late Kerubo collapsed after fetching nappier grass for her cows from a nearby farm.
"She was well. She woke up and as usual, she greeted her neighbours and left to fetch nappier grass from a nearby shamba. She collapsed and died on the spot," said Omai.
Omai has called on the family of the deceased to be calm as investigations are carried out to establish the cause of death.
"I call upon the family to be calm. The police will do their investigations and come out with the results. Postmortem will be carried out for us to be sure what happened. We send our sincere condolence to the family during this trying moment," added the chief.
No family member was willing to speak to the media. It is not yet clear if the deceased had an existing medical condition which could have caused her sudden death.
The body of the deceased was moved to the morgue.
