Kenya swimmers participation for 2020 Tokyo Olympic in doubt after a federation ban for failing to hold an election in due time.
The participation of the Kenya swimmers in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games has been cast into disarray following the suspension of the Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) by the International Swimming Federation (Fina); for failing to hold its election according to Nairobi News.
It is believed that Fina has cracked the whip following constant notice requesting the federation to hold its election, with the last election coming September 2014.
"Through this letter, we would like to inform you that Kenyan Swimming Federation is not in compliance with Fina Rules and Fina Constitution," Fina Executive Director Cornel Marculescu.
As per the Fina rules, an election must be held after every four years, a thing that KSF has neglected. And with Kenya being given three different dates by the world swimming governing body to conduct its election, nothing has been done, as Kenya has not met the deadline extension forcing Fina to act.
As a result, Fina said that KSF and its affiliates, including clubs stands suspended until they conduct the election.
"This suspension aims to protect the Fina Aquatics Family in Kenya. The suspension will remain until, among others the Constitution of the Kenyan Swimming Federation is in accordance with Fina Rules; through holding of the election," FINA said in a letter dated December 16, 2019.
This means the participation of the two Kenya swimmers for the Tokyo Games is in doubt.
