Parents from informal settlements in Uasin Gishu whose children performed well in KCPE have been asked to apply for scholarships offered by government’s Elimu Scholarship Programme.
According to Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa, the scholarships are funded by the ministry of education with support from the World Bank.
“I want to call upon parents from the informal settlement with the poor background to apply for the scholarship since their fees will be catered for until they complete their secondary education,” said the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner.
Jaldesa who spoke to the press in Eldoret town on Saturday said the targeted informal settlements in Uasin Gishu include Munyaka, Langas, Kamukunji, and Huruma.
“The committee together with chiefs has started the selection of needy pupils from the said areas. Those who will benefit are pupils from a very poor background,” Jaldesa added.
He noted that the government's intentions are to ensure that no needy child should miss school because of a lack of school fees as it has been repeatedly witnessed before in the country, and that was the reason that the amount was set aside.
The County commissioner called on residents who know such children to report them so that they may be helped.
He, however, said that the government will ensure that all pupils who sat for KCPE will transit to form one and that there is no reason whatsoever to deny your child a chance to join Highschool.
Jaldesa said the government has given enough money to support infrastructure to ensure no pupil misses to join form one in either boarding or day schools.
