Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has said that Mombasa County is more than ready to host this year's Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview on the Standard Media Group-owned Kenya Television Network (KTN), the CS also said that the Mama Ngina Water Front would be opened on Mashujaa Day.
He revealed that 460 million shillings had been set aside for the construction of the water front but only 433 million shillings was expended on the project.
"Mombasa is privileged to host this year's Mashujaa Day. We will also open the Mama Ngina Water Front which was constructed at a cost of Sh 433m, the budget was Sh460m, for the first time a government project has been below budget, " the Tourism Cabinet Secretrary said.
The Mashujaa Day celebrations have been slated for 20, October with high-level government officials led by President Uhuru Kenyatta expected to attend.
There were fears that the tragedy at the Likoni Channel that claimed the lives of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu would overshadow the national celebrations.
Malindi member of parliament Aisha Jumwa had threatened to lead demonstrations on Mashujaa Day if the bodies of the 2 victims would not have been recovered.
The bodies were retrieved over the weekend after a days-long multi-agency recovery effort.
