National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has declared the Kibra parliamentary seat vacant following the demise of Ken Okoth on July 2.
The National Assembly Speaker issued writs for the seat on Wednesday in a special Gazette notice.
Muturi has now directed Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to prepare for the by-election following the death of the lawmaker.
Chebukati is expected to announce the date for the by-election.
The commission will announce the by-election within 90 days after the declaration from the Speaker. This implies that the mini poll will be conducted before November 14.
Okoth retained the seat during the August 8, 2017, general election after serving his first term.
ODM is now expected to go back to the drawing board to field a candidate who will retain the seat. Several candidates are likely to consider contesting for the post including ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.
It remains unclear whether Jubilee will field a candidate for the post.
Kibra has for the longest time remained an opposition zone.
