President Uhuru Kenyatta’s promise to sportspersons has come back to haunt him.
Four months ago, Uhuru promised Kenya national teams that he will not allow any of them to be stranded inside or outside the country during competitions.
It has, however, emerged that the Kenya women netball team is stranded in Cape Town, South Africa.
According to Citizen Digital, the team’s plea for help seems to have landed on deaf ears after it emerged that the players are yet to be assisted.
The team had travelled to represent the nation at the 2019 Africa Netball Championship only to be denied access.
The Sports Ministry has since been put on the spot after the revelation of the woes that befell the team.
"We have set aside funds to ensure no team that has flown the national flag will sleep in an airport because they have lacked tickets, they have been chased out of their hotel rooms because of unpaid bills or they have gone to eat in remote areas of towns because their allowances haven’t been paid yet they are representing the nation,” (Tumeweka pesa saa ya kuhakikisha kuwa hakuna team ambayo imebeba bendera yetu italala kwa kiwanja ya ndege kwasbabu wamekosa tikiti, ambao watafukuzwa kwa hoteli kwa sababu hawana marupurupu ya kulipa hoteli ama wameenda kukula vichochoroni kwasababu hawana pesa za allowance na wewe unawakilisha nchi yako)," Uhuru said in the past as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The president's sentiments came after photos of the Gor Mahia team sleeping on the floor surfaced online.
It now remains unclear whether the ministry has responded to the volleyball team's plight.
