A new proposed amendment by South Mugirango lawmaker Sylvannus Osoro will hand Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi more powers if passed by the parliament.
In the bill, the Member of Parliament wants the Cabinet Minister to determine the hours within which alcoholic drinks can be advertised on electronic media channels.
This means that of passed, the Cabinet Secretary will have the power to decide over and determine the best timing for such adverts, to prevent unwanted exposure.
"...the Cabinet Secretary shall prescribe the hours within which electronic advertisement of alcoholic drinks shall be done,” reads the amendment in part.
Currently, the nation is dealing with rising cases of underage use of the drug, which has been blamed on advertising influence.
Should the law be passed, then the CS will be taking over from the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), the Communication Authority (CA) and National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) which currently regulate such.
However, he will have to consult with the agencies before making a declaration, the bill states.
This will be additional powers in the hands of the already high-flying minister, who is among the most powerful state officials in President Uhuru Kenyatta's leadership.
