Speaking on Monday on a panel discussion on Royal Media Services-owned Citizen Television, the outspoken lawmaker said Prof Makoha should ask himself who should be appending signatures on university cheques, who should be the accounting and procurement officer in a university.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator made the case for executive officers in universities to be delinked from administrative issues, contending that the current arrangement allowed vice-chancellors unfettered powers.

"It now a must that the cabinet secretary for education should ask himself tough questions. Who will be appending their signatures on university cheques? Who will be the accounting officer, the procuremet officer? (Lazima sasa huyu waziri wa elimu ajiulize maswali ambayo ni magumu. Ni nani ambaye atakuwa anahitajika kuweka kidole katika zile cheki za shule? Ni nani ambaye atakuwa accounting officer, procurement officer...)" Ledama Ole Kina said.

Prof Magoha, at the time of writing this article, had not said a word about the revelations of corruption at the public higher learning institution.

The Narok senator said the financial systems in universities across the country were riddled with a lot of loopholes that needed to be closed as fast as possible to prevent the plunder of university coffers.

His words come amid calls for action to be taken against corrupt officials at the Maasai Mara University that finds itself in the harsh glare of the media and unrelenting scrutiny.
